Genetic Dissection of Attention Networks

Assessing the efficiency, heritability, molecular genetics and imaging genetics of attention networks
![]()
Developmental brain disorders such as schizophrenia, ADHD, autism, OCD, TS and reading disorder show high heritabilities which suggests that genetic variation can contribute to abnormal cognition. How might genetic variability give rise to individual differences in the efficiency of basic cognitive processes in humans ? Our research builds on the wealth of genetic information flowing from animal models of behavior and brain development as well as from large scale genetic mapping and epidemiology studies on psychiatric illness in humans. Candidate genes identified through these approaches are assessed in our lab via simple cognitive endophenotypes in the context of twin-studies, population-based gene association studies and imaging genetic studies. Our short term aim is to better understand the basic biology of the development of neural networks that support cognitive control. Our long term aim is to provide a knowlege base for treatment optimization in the coming era of personalized, genomic medicine.

Facilities
Our lab is located in Lasdon Labs at Weill Medical College of Cornell University and is dedicated to the genotyping of DNA samples. We have also arranged space across the street at Rockefeller University in the Laboratory of Neurobiology and Behavior directed by Professor Don Pfaff. The Rockefeller lab area resides on the 5th floor of Smith Hall, a space once occupied by George Miller, who along with Michael Gazzaniga coined the designation "The Cognitive Neurosciences".
